Getting down with the Paper Chaser: C-Ga

Mika Stefano: Who is C - Ga?
C-Ga: C-Ga is a simple boy from Alexandra with dreams of making it big in the showbiz, entertain the masses and inspire the young people from his ghetto. C-Ga is all about the great things in life. C-Ga is love and music.

Mika Stefano: Where did the name C-Ga come from?
C-Ga: I’ve been called C-Ga in my township since I was a little boy. Its township slang for my real name. For example if your real name is Mika, you would call u Mikza or Mikzozo.

Mika Stefano: Mikza, I like that! So what is your real name?
C-Ga: Sipho Masebe

Mika Stefano: Where are you from?
C-Ga: Alexandra Township

Mika Stefano: How old are you?
C-Ga: 27

Mika Stefano: When did you start performing?
C-Ga: The arts have always been a part of me: music, dance, acting etc from the age of 15. Those were some of the things that kept me off the streets, and the crime I was exposed to in the townships

Mika Stefano: How did you get behind the mic?
C-Ga: Music has always been around me since childhood, I grew up in a musical home, my mother being part of the famous girl group Mahottela Queens and Mthunzini Girls and my uncle Bhanza was with Alexandra brass band. So it was the most natural thing for me.

Mika Stefano: What's the worst thing that's happened to you on stage?
C-Ga: Lol I was perfuming for a huge crowd at the Soweto festival, I was just so excited by the crowd then suddenly forgot the lyrics. Fortunately, I always have hype guys so they filled in for me, I'm grateful that people did not pick it up. But it was quite embarrassing to be up there, all confident then boom!

Mika Stefano: What other jobs have you done?
C-Ga: I did a couple of TV shows like, Rhythm city, Tshisa, A place called home, Beautiful contradictions(short gay film which will be flighted this year at the gay film festival) I have been very blessed in getting the best jobs, I believe in hard work. I’ve also worked in the retail industry.

Mika Stefano: Share one funny story with us about a previous job?
C-Ga: I was on a production for a popular TV drama. One day as I was dressing up this famous actress whose name I won’t mention, she suddenly asked me to tie her shoe laces, insisting. She was so rude and demanded that I do it, which I wouldn’t have minded. It got so bad to the point that I called it quits on that day, because my thinking was my name will be written on lights, and I’m the one that should get their shoe laces done for! Not the other way round.

Mika Stefano: What was it like working on Backstage?
C-Ga: It was cool. I didn’t really do much there because I was a featured extra. I was actually dressing a number of actors (stylist) when the late casting director Trudie Taljaard thought I’d be perfect on TV. So she tried me out on TV. Other acting gigs came later; like Tshisa and Rhythm City.

Mika Stefano: What TV programme are you working on now?
C-Ga: Currently we just finished shooting a pilot for my reality TV show Real Tym with C-ga a music driven show about the ins and outs of the entertainment industry

Mika Stefano: You acted in MR Bones, What part did you play?
C-Ga: Kwame, I was on the scene at the Golf Course

Mika Stefano: You also studied at Moving Into Dance, do you still dance?
C-Ga: I had an opportunity to work with the great dance teacher Victor Mohapi where I specialised in African modern dance which was a great opportunity for me. I got to learn more about different genres in dance but I stopped a long time ago, just grew out of it

Mika Stefano: Can we expect a crazy dance routine to accompany any of your up and coming songs?
C-Ga: I’m working on that. I’ll make sure that you’re the first to know!

Mika Stefano: When growing up, what career did you want to pursue?
C-Ga: I have always wanted to be a Marine Biologist, because I love the sea and animals, being raised by a single parent that was not possible because it’s really an expensive course, so I opted for integrated marketing communication.

Mika Stefano: Have you ever had a 9-5 day job?
C-Ga: I started in retail as a sales rep, Levis for 3yrs and Guess SA where I was the Visual coordinator.
Mika Stefano: What is your favourite type of music?
C-Ga: I honestly like all genres of music from your Anita Baker, Oleta Adams, Sibongile Khumalo, Al Green, I love Good music.

Mika Stefano: What are your top 3 songs currently?
C-Ga: No way to love me by Oleta Adams, Queen Lattifah - Gone Away and uhmmm.... let me think: Jadakiss featuring Jasmine Sullivan – Smoking Gun

Mika Stefano: What CD is in your CD Shuttle right now?

C-Ga: Da Les, Dj Twitty, Akon, Howza

Mika Stefano: What can we expect from C-Ga in the next 5 years?
C-Ga: Well if things go my way, you can expect loads and loads of refreshing entertainment, great songs and all of the above.

Mika Stefano: Are you involved?
C-Ga: I am indeed.

Mika Stefano: You have many gay friends, are you gay?
C-Ga: I’m not gay. I have friends from all walks of life and they are all special to me. If they have my best interests at heart, I’ll have their best interests as well.

Mika Stefano: You have just released your first CD, Paper Chaser. Tell me about it?
C-Ga: A Paper Chaser is a hard worker, a go getter, someone who isn’t afraid of chasing their dream
It took 2years to finish the album because I had to write about situations that I could relate to. My music is Kwaito with an element of Pop, soul, Jazz. It was important for me to fuse all my favourite sounds in one album and write about my people in the townships and their everyday struggles, and to inspire them not to give up and be the best they could be, hence the title Paper Chaser. I have worked with some of the best in the industry on this album like Dj Dino Bravo, Urban Reign etc. I also wrote a Tribute song Emnqamlezweni to all the legends that passed on like Lebo Mathosa, Lucky Dube, Brenda Fassie. The song features the St Francis Orchestra.

Mika Stefano: If you could have done a duet or featured any local artist, who would you have liked to team up with?
C-Ga: Phuzekhemisi and Busi Mhlongo

Mika Stefano: Who would you like to work with on your next album?
C-Ga: Thembi seete, Simphiwe Dana and Mandoza, Lizha James

Mika Stefano: What genre is your music?
C-Ga: Kwaito

Mika Stefano: When are you shooting the music video?
C-Ga: In September, just waiting for the single to hype up on radio, for people to be familiar with the song

Mika Stefano: When can we expect your CD in stores?
C-Ga: People can get the album in stores in a couple of weeks or go to MTN Exploded/C-ga it’s really a collector’s item, a definite must have

African Star Communications - Farah Fortune

So I recently attended the 1st Year Anniversary of one of the hottest PR Company’s in Johannesburg, African Star Communications. Established by a remarkable business woman and mother of the social scene, Farah Fortune is the lady behind this flourishing company. Farah is one of the people I look up to; she has achieved so much in such a short space of time, which is why I have chosen to interview her on my website. Even for a casual interview she looked stylish, wearing a grey high waist skirt and a white blouse. This is what went down...

Mika Stefano: What is African Star Communications?

Farah Fortune: African Star Communications is a boutique Corporate and Celebrity Public Relations and event management Agency

Mika Stefano: What did you do before you set up African Star Communications?

Farah Fortune: I was a publicist for Ster-Kinekor Distribution, then a shopping editor for Alchemy Publishing, the an Account Exec for Cutting Edge PR before I got sick of bosses!

Mika Stefano: Why did you pick the name, African Star Communications?

Farah Fortune: The company was originally suppose to be called Fortunate Communications... I know... I know... but then a phone shop in Durban had the same name, so African Star was my second choice but honestly it just came to me no direct thought, just God's intervention.

Mika Stefano: Why did you want to start your own business?

Farah Fortune: I wanted to be in control of my own destiny. I was tired of saying I wanted to do it. I knew there was no way to do what I loved unless I was doing it for me.
I have passion for what I do. Love what you do and do what you love! My favourite lyrics in a song.

Mika Stefano: What were some of the challenges, when you began?

Farah Fortune: Cash flow! I really wanted to start this business but couldn't get it going as I had no capital and no one believed in me enough to finance me. So I made the decision to just start up. I had R1000.00. I spent R589 on a cc and the rest on business cards. Within the first 3 weeks we had a job with AIG/Manchester United.

Mika Stefano: Do you still face these challenges?

Farah Fortune: No, now we are a year old, African Star Communications is now more established and more financially stable. Being able to employ two staff members’ full time and 3 freelancers when needed is a great achievement in this economy.

Mika Stefano: You have been up for a year, and you have already created a huge impact. Why do you think this is so?

Farah Fortune: Personal Relationships. Having close personal relationships with people in your field of business is essential, but also being able to adapt to any situation and conversation is of utmost importance. Also only surrounding yourself with good people who honestly have your best interests at heart is a wise move.

Mika Stefano: What have been some of the most memorable jobs you have worked on?

Farah Fortune: Planning Dudu Zuma's 27th birthday party. Planning the president's daughter's party was a phenomenal experience.WOW! Also the launch of The Original Penguin clothing store in Sandton when we hosted Clint Eastwood by pure accident was another great experience. African Romance for Miss World 2008 was a unique experience too!

Mika Stefano: People may assume you just plan events? What else do you do?

Farah Fortune: We also do publicity for celebrities, organising inter

views, appearances and crisis control if need be. A celebrity having a publicist gives them the more professional look, that's where we come in. We handle their exposure to the public. The same goes for a corporate company, making sure their company is featured in all the right publications for all the right reasons.

Mika Stefano: Who are some of your clients?

Farah Fortune: Former and current clients include, African Romance for Miss World 2008, Nando's Peri-Deli, Great Lengths Hair Extensions, The Original Penguin Clothing Store.

Mika Stefano: What is your vision for African Star Communications in the next 5 years?

Farah Fortune: To see the company grow from strength to strength and become a force to be reckoned with. I see us employing young driven men and woman, with passion for what they do.

Mika Stefano: You are both a successful business woman, fashionable socialite and loving mother, how do you juggle all these roles and still look gorgeous?

Farah Fortune: LOL! It's hard work. I love what I do and I have a great supportive structure of friends and a fantastic nanny. My friends help with my 4 year old daughter and so does her dad's family. I only go out when I have to and my friends help with the business too.

Mika Stefano: What advice could you give to young people who want to do what you do?

Farah Fortune: Follow your passion. Don't do anything for money, do it because you love it!
The money will come!

Mika Stefano: If you could do anything else, what would you do?

Farah Fortune: I would love to write for The New York Times; in the entertainment section.

Mika Stefano: So would I, Farah...lol... Perhaps we both run off to NY. If you had to plan a dinner party for 3 VIP guests, who would they be? Besides myself...

Farah Fortune: (laughing) My mother, Dr. Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela

Mika Stefano: Who are some of the people you look up to?

Farah Fortune: My family, I love them very much, my grandmothers who have both passed away, memories of them remind me how to be a strong woman, my friend Avril Mama, her support for me is endless.

Mika Stefano: How can one find out more info on African Star Communications?
Farah Fortune: You can visit us online on www.africanstar.co.za from July

Koldproduk

Last week I met with Moki Sage, emcee of Koldproduk. Simbarashe-Garikai Bako also knowns as Moki Sage or Scarlet Green.134625 is the cute guy behind the mic of Koldproduk.
I have only recently started listening to Koldproduk, but I must admit, I secretly like their sound. If you havent heard them I suggest you visit their myspace site. You can also buy their CD, ALL UNDER HEAVEN. Koldproduk have been together since 2005, and have already produced the best music video out of africa, named by MTV BASE.
Moki Sage is not only the voice within Koldproduk, he is also a young architech at one of the country's leading firms. He is a cool down to earth guy, who has a lot to say... and its worth the listen...

Mika: Who is Koldproduk?
Moki Sage: Koldproduk is the little candle that burnt down the big house; the unknown; the underdog.

Mika: Who makes up the members of Koldproduk?
Moki Sage: Myself, Moki Sage, DJ Soosh, Whispa, T*Spark. The members behind the scenes are Wayne Berger and Mic Mann.

Mika: Why Koldproduk? (the name?)
Moki Sage: the koldproduk is the underdog and by giving ourselves the name we acknowledge the humble way in which we entered this entertainment industry and remind ourselves who we were even after we grow beyond this.

Mika: How would you describe your sound?
Moki Sage: We describe our sound as an ecclectic blend of Hip hop, R&B, soul, alternative rock, reggae, roots reggae, and it incorporates various types of rap. Our album All Under Heaven oscillates between various moods during its 18 track journey to keep it interesting, and on all levels we try to scratch below the surface and reach for depth, especially lyrically.

Mika: You have won many awards, please would you list them?
Moki Sage: Apart from receiving the honour of MTV Base naming our debut video for Hush “the best out Africa for 2007” and two 2007 Channel O nominations in the Best video and Best special effects categories, plus a 2008 SAMA nomination for Best video we received two Go Urban awards for Best Hip hop group and Best video in March 2008. These awards help spur us on because they make us aware that others outside of the project recognize that our work is worthy of praise and honourable mention.

Mika: I feel the video helped sell the group, can you comment on how you maintain your image? And how you use visuals to sell Koldproduk?
Moki Sage: The image we present is always of a polished, high quality end product and we maintain this by paying attention to detail and working hard at what we do. The visuals are the vehicle of the koldproduk symbol and koldproduk as a brand, and they reinforce the image and everything it represents.

Mika: Koldproduk has a fashion range, why?
Moki Sage: The fashion range and the merchandise are another element of the brand and are an extension of our empire as an everyday brand that reaches deeper into the lives of our consumers.
Take a look at our websites to get a deeper look into the other elemnts besides the music. www.koldproduk.com or www.uprootrecords.com.

Mika: Who inspires you?
Moki Sage: > Locally
All the locally established brands be they personalities or companies. The likes of Sun Goddess, which we have watched grow over the past few years, and visionaries like Patrice Motsepe, who have long term visions for growth.
> Internationally
The American spirit of persistence in driving a message through and selling an idea, as well as the determination and the necessary elements in the industry that drive pop culture.
It's out there for the taking, we just need to step up and take it!

Mika: Who would you say is your biggest threat, in the South African music industry, and why?
Moki Sage: As far as i'm concerned, anyone hungry enough to do whatever it takes to be the best at everything in this industry, because we all know that anyone with that kind of drive is a formidable threat to all of us.

Mika: What is your opinion of Hip Hop in South Africa?
Moki Sage: Still at its infancy but thanksfully it's growing to a good enough level for talented individuals to explore it as a viable career option. But all those that claim to love Hip hop need to feed it financially; i.e. less boot-legging of music and shorter guest lists at Hip hop events and more paying customers.

Mika: Can you comment on the politics within Jozi (the group)?
Moki Sage: Nope: we're on the outside of all of that just like everyone else.

Mika: What messages du try bring accross in your music?
Moki Sage: Apart from the sheer pleasure of listening to koldproduk's music, we find ways to say things that you might have had on your mind but didn't have the words for. We try to touch various apects of life and give a different look at things: our perspective. We tell you that everthing happens under Heaven; to listen for a second; to rise up; to nevermind who around you says what; to play our music loud; to party until you pass out; to take a peak into our crazy imagination; and find a piece of yourself in what we are; and we show you that Hip hop and music are infinite.

Mika: Who du think listens to Koldproduk?
Moki Sage: People that listen to Hip hop as well as open-minded listeners of music in general, because our styles vary so much that people are drawn to various aspects of our music, our image and our identity.
Many people that stumble upon our music tell us on www.myspace.com/koldproduk
project that they don't normally listen to Hip Hop but they like what we've done with All Under Heaven.

Mika: What do you do in your spare time?
Moki Sage: We try to live life a little. Lately we get less and less time to spare and creative writing, drawing, thanking God for all of this success, listening to music, watching movies, blogging and keeping diaries, hanging out with friends and girlfriends has to all get squeezed into whatever time we have outside of work.

Mika: How do you manage to handle a 9-5 job and then still entertain...?
Moki Sage: It's not at all easy and the demands of one overlap onto the other, leaving even less of that spare time we were just speaking about. Physically it's draining and professionally both are unforgiving in the expectations of delivery.

Mika: Where do you see Koldproduk in 5 years time?
Moki Sage: High on drugs in a hotel full of groupies. (laughing) Just kidding; 5 years from now koldproduk will be searching for the next level in the evolution of Hip hop and music and new frontiers in which to spread our music and as an international group.

Mika: Are there any possibilities of solo projects?
Moki Sage: Yes, 2008 is the year of growth for koldproduk and solo projects are on the horizon.

Mika: What would you like to say to your fans, or people who are reading this?
Moki Sage: Honestly, thank you for taking an interset and you really should buy the album All Under Heaven and listen to it, then srcamble it in your reguolar playlist and listen to it some more. And get the hoodie and the screensavers for you phone and computor, then the ringtone and above all find a part of your spirit resonating with our as well.
The words in this interview only bridge the gaps of our other words, lyrics and music whose impact will last much longer. Rise up and let's continue this conversation on www.myspace.com/koldprodukproject .

Mika: What advice can you give to young emcee's who are trying to get into the game?
Moki Sage: You're a koldproduk because you're the underdog right now. Apart from my incredible God-given talent and detarmination and resources plus the team surrounding me, look at the difficult but glorious path i'm travelling along and see how similar you and i are. Nothing is out of your reach and only you can limit yourself.
Also, i'm frigging dying to hear some hot Hip hop, not this garbage that we're all getting tired of, so hurry up and lay something down so we know that there's another great mind out there on the same grind that we're on.

Mika: What is your favorite song/artist?
Moki Sage: Right now my favourite artiste is Timbaland's music because he's blurred the lines between the different sounds and genres i'm normally used to listening to and he's opened me up to other types that i wouldn't have otherwise listened to. He's doing what many of us unknowingly want to do/ want to hear.

Mika: Who would you love to work with?
Moki Sage: Timbaland, The Roots, Damian Marley, Proverb, Battle cat, Ootz...right now that's that.

Mika: What does your AKA name mean?
Moki Sage: Moki is derived from the Norse night god of mischief Loki, and reflects the playful side of my creativity. The Sage part is the the slightly wiser side of it. Thus Moki Sage embodies the dynamic of what i do creatively.
And i just think that Scarlet Green.134625 is a cool a.k.a.
